Golf Skins

Every hole has a pot. Win it outright or watch it grow. One well-timed birdie can be worth six holes of money โ€” that's the magic of skins.

What is Golf Skins?

Skins is one of the most exciting formats in casual golf, popularized on TV by the legendary Skins Game events featuring Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and later Tiger Woods. The concept is elegantly simple: each hole has a fixed dollar value (a "skin"), and the player who makes the lowest score on that hole wins it outright.

The twist that makes skins electric is the carryover rule. When two or more players tie for the lowest score on a hole, nobody wins โ€” the skin carries over to the next hole. A hole worth $5 becomes worth $10 after one tie, $15 after two, $20 after three. If a long string of holes ties, a single birdie can be worth an enormous amount of money.

Unlike stroke play or match play, skins creates a completely unpredictable payout structure. A player can go unnoticed through the first 12 holes and then win three big carryover skins in a row to take the whole pot. That tension on every single hole is what keeps everyone engaged all the way to 18.

How Scoring Works

  1. 1

All players play each hole normally and record their scores. The player with the lowest score on the hole wins the skin โ€” but only if their score is lower than every other player's. There are no partial wins.

  2. 2

If any two players tie for the lowest score, nobody wins the skin. It doesn't matter if one player is clearly in second while others tied for first โ€” any tie at the top kills the skin.

  3. 3

A tied skin carries over to the next hole. The next hole is now worth two skins. If that also ties, the hole after is worth three skins โ€” and so on. There is no limit to how many can carry.

  4. 4

When a player finally wins a hole outright, they collect all the accumulated skins โ€” the current hole plus every carryover. The pot resets to one skin for the next hole.

  5. 5

If the final hole ties, the carryover skins are split evenly among all players (or kept as uncollected, depending on your group's rules โ€” decide before you start).

Carryover Example

Hole 4: Danny and Mike both make par โ€” tie, skin carries. Hole 5: Danny, Mike, and Tom all make bogey โ€” tie again, pot now worth 3 skins. Hole 6: Danny makes birdie, Mike and Tom make par. Danny wins 3 skins outright. The pot resets to 1 skin for hole 7.

Playing Net Skins with Handicaps

Skins works great as a net game. Each player's gross score on a hole is reduced by any handicap strokes they receive on that hole (based on the course stroke index). Net scores are then compared โ€” so a 20-handicapper can absolutely win a skin against a scratch player.

Net skins levels the playing field significantly and is highly recommended for groups with mixed handicaps. Strokes & Stakes handles the per-hole handicap math automatically โ€” just enter each player's handicap at setup.

Setting Up the Wager

Skins stakes are usually quoted as a dollar value per skin. In the most common format, all players contribute equally to a pool and skins are assigned a value equal to the total pool divided by the number of holes. Alternatively, you can set a fixed per-skin dollar amount that all players are responsible for paying whoever wins each skin.

Example โ€” $5/skin, 4 Players, 18 Holes

Each hole is worth $5 per player in the group, meaning a single outright win is worth $15 (the other 3 players each owe $5).

A skin with 3 carryovers is worth $60 (4 skins ร— $15).

A player who wins 6 skins total takes home $90 minus their own share of what they owe on holes they lost.

For casual groups, $2โ€“$5 per skin is a sweet spot โ€” meaningful without being scary. At $5/skin with carryovers, a really juicy pot can easily hit $40โ€“$60 for a single hole, which creates genuine excitement without anyone getting cleaned out.

Strokes & Stakes calculates the exact settlement at the end โ€” who won how many skins, total value, and what everyone owes each other โ€” so you can walk off 18 knowing exactly who pays what.
